How to play Rattler
Free in your browser, no sign-up, no download: open a lobby, share the invite link, play.👥 2–8 players
🐍 Goal: Eat as many field mice as you can – each one makes the snake one cell longer and a little faster. Your score is your length.
🎮 How it works: Steer with the arrow keys or WASD; on a phone, swipe or use the d-pad. Two turns are queued, a 180° reversal is ignored. The game ends when you bite your own tail. Solo, pause with the space bar, P or Esc.
🍽️ Hunger: After 34 steps without a mouse the snake loses its tail segment. Once only the head is left, it starves – so standing still does not pay.
✨ Gold mouse: After a meal a gold mouse sometimes turns up. It is worth three segments but is gone again after 40 steps.
🏁 Race: Everyone plays on their own yard, and the mice appear from the same sequence for all. Shared start after 3-2-1, no pause. Anyone offline for more than 15 seconds is out with their last length; the race ends after 15 minutes.
🏆 Winner: The longest snake wins; on equal length, the one that survived longer. Solo, you chase your personal best.
Settings & scoring
☠️ Poison mouse: In a race with mischief, every gold mouse eaten sends the next rival a poison mouse – taking turns among everyone still playing. It is green, has crossed eyes and a skull and disappears after 40 steps. Whoever eats it loses two segments, but never more than down to the head and one segment.
🪵 Fence: Wrap-around (default): out over the edge and back in on the other side. Deadly: touching the fence ends your run. Personal bests are kept per variant.
⚙ Settings: The fence is a lobby setting. In a race the host also sets the race type: Classic – everyone plays for themselves – or With trouble (default, with poison mouse).
💡 Good to know: The field has 17 × 17 squares; on a French keyboard ZQSD steers. Solo, the snake only starts once you choose a direction. In a race you see the standings and small pictures of your rivals' fields; a note above the standings says who sent a poison mouse. Whoever reloads the page or leaves the race is out with their length and watches – the others play on, even if only one is left. Once someone is out, the small pictures show the others' yards live.
🕹 The lobby is an old arcade cabinet: the seats on the screen, the host's START button on the console; when someone joins, a coin drops audibly. Next to it, once the leaderboard is switched on, hangs a high-score board with the best single run per account – guests are not on it. Solo, “Again” starts without the intro, and “New best” only appears when the old value is beaten.
